In general, each state and county has different requirements for obtaining permits, but they share many common characteristics.

Here is what you need to know about permits, and why they matter.
Every project in North Carolina When do you need a permit?
In North Carolina, no permit is required for projects costing less than $40,000.* This amount includes all the work done. Anything less than $40,000, you do not need a permit.
*$40,000 is a cumulative amount. If you have 3 projects happening at the same time, by the same person that are $15,000 each, you would need a permit.
What is the purpose of getting a permit?
Safety: Inspectors check many items, for example, electrical wiring, structural changes, plumbing systems, and HVAC installations. They ensure the safety of everyone living in the home.
Building code compliance: Every city has building codes that contractors must follow. They maintain structural integrity, fire safety, electrical systems, and energy efficiency. Without a permit, the work might not meet these requirements.
protects home value: if work is done without permits, it can delay a sale, reduce the homes value, and the buyer may require repairs or inspections.
avoids fines and legal issues: cities can assess fines, stop work-orders, and require the work to be remediated - which in the grand scheme of things, costs you in the end.
insurance protection: If something goes wrong (like electrical fires or structural issues), insurance companies may deny claims if the work wasn't permitted. Permits show the work was done professionally and legally.
In conclusion, permits create a record of the project with the city for accountability. It shows who did the work, what work was done, and when it was inspected.
